Curriculum & Programs

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

At Holy Rosary we promote and use Catholic values to develop the whole child in the Catholic tradition. Religious Education classes are taught daily, and the children are regularly involved in Liturgies.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered in Grade 2, the Sacrament of Eucharist in Grade 3 and the Sacrament of Confirmation in Grade 6.

VELS2
ENGLISH

The study of English is about the appropriate and effective use of language in texts, as a means of learning and the development of knowledge about language. English thoroughly covers reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

MATHEMATICS

Through our Mathematics program our children gain a knowledge and understanding of mathematical processes, with the ability to apply these effectively within and outside the classroom environment.

THE HUMANITIES

The Humanities provide a framework for students to examine the complex processes that have shaped the modern world and to investigate responses to different challenges including people’s interconnections with the environment. The Humanities include:
• Civics and Citizenship
• History
• Geography
• Business & Economics

CAPABILITIES

Capabilities are a set of discrete knowledge and skills that can be taught explicitly through the learning areas, but are not fully defined by any of the learning areas or disciplines. The four capabilities are:
• Critical and Creative Thinking
• Intercultural
• Ethical
• Personal and Social

VELS1
HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

This program promotes physical activity and the development of movement competence. It examines the factors that affect people's participation and performance in physical activity and the importance of health. It aims to develop in students the understanding of the need for a balance between physical, social and emotional health.

SCIENCE

Holy Rosary provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important scientific concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, the contribution of science to our culture and society, and its applications in our lives.

TECHNOLOGIES

Technologies provides a framework for students to learn how to use technologies to create innovative solutions that meet current and future needs. We encourage students to make decisions about development and use of technologies, considering the impacts of change and how technologies may contribute to the future.

LANGUAGES

Children learn Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN).  This gives them the opportunity to use that language to communicate with others as well as studying how languages are structured and function.

THE ARTS

The Arts are a means of expression and communication common to all societies. Our goals are to provide experiences and opportunities for children to enjoy and engage in artistic expression.
At Holy Rosary we focus on two areas:

  • Performing Arts – music, drama and dance
  • Visual Arts & Media Arts

A voluntary school choir is formed for specific events and performs at school and community functions.

 LIBRARY

Each class visits the library once a week, in this session they are given the opportunity to read and borrow books.
The library is also open some mornings and at lunchtime once a week for children to use.

MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT (MTSS)

Holy Rosary uses a Multi-Tiered System of Support for students requiring additional assistance in Literacy and Numeracy. MTSS is designed to help schools identify struggling students early and intervene quickly. Evidence based instruction, provided by trained teachers, supports students' at their point of need in small group and 1-1 settings.

WATER SAFETY

Foundation – Grade 6 students participate in water safety lessons.
Students travel to the Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre in Kangaroo Flat where they are taught by qualified Instructors.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION: EXCURSIONS & CAMPS

Children in all grades are involved in Camping and Outdoor Education Programs. This aims to encourage independence and develop personal relationships in an informal setting.

  • Foundation/1/2/3 - Incursions & Excursions
  • Year 4 - Two day camp
  • Year 5 - Three day camp
  • Year 6 - Three day camp
S.T.E.M. & SUSTAINABILITY

An environmental program where the children learn about plant care and propagation, gardens and animal care.

RESILIENCE, RIGHTS & RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships is a program that was developed in light of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. In the primary schools years the program focuses on teaching children to treat everyone with respect and dignity.
